01 The Award: Best Sound Effects Editing, 1999
At the 72nd Academy Awards, held in March 2000, Dane A. Davis won the Oscar for Best Sound Effects Editing for his work on The Matrix. That award was the film's recognition for its entire sonic palette — not just the code rain, but also the bullet-time sequences, the dojo fight, the lobby shootout, and every other moment where the audio had to make a digital reality feel physically real.
Davis also took home a BAFTA for Best Sound and an MPSE Golden Reel Award for the same film. The Motion Picture Sound Editors organization has interviewed Davis extensively about the techniques he used on the project.

02 The Source Material: Rain on Glass, and Rain in a Barrel
The core recordings for the code-rain sound were exactly what they sound like: raindrops hitting window panes. Davis captured the recordings, digitized them, and imported them into his Pro Tools session as the raw material for the audio that would play under every shot of falling green glyphs. In parallel, he tried a second source: rain falling into a barrel. The two textures gave him different frequency profiles to manipulate.
Neither recording sounded like the finished effect. Rain on glass has a dense, papery, high-frequency character. Rain in a barrel has a lower, rounder thump. What Davis needed was something that sounded like information falling — discrete, granular, but continuous enough to feel like a flow. The raw recordings were starting points, not final elements. Everything that happened to them afterward happened inside the computer.
03 Working Entirely In the Box
Davis made a deliberate, well-documented choice on The Matrix: he did not use any analog outboard gear on the project. No hardware compressors, no tape, no analog reverbs, no outboard filters. Every processing chain lived inside Pro Tools, which Digidesign had only recently been integrated with Avid. For 1999 this was unusual — most sound designers of Davis's era still ran key stages through familiar hardware.
Davis's reasoning was conceptual, not just practical. The Matrix is a film about a digital world posing as a physical one. Using analog warmth to shape its audio would smuggle a physical signature into what was supposed to be pure computation. Working entirely in the box meant the film's soundtrack was produced by the same kind of process the film's plot was about.
This choice rippled through every decision. Reverbs came from digital plugins. Time-stretching, pitch-shifting, and spectral analysis happened inside the computer. Digital noise reduction was not a cleanup tool — it was an active instrument Davis used to carve unusual frequencies out of the raindrop recordings and then amplify them back in a different shape. The same techniques modern producers now use routinely were, in 1999, a methodological commitment.
04 Micro-Looping: Motion From Redundancy
The signature technique Davis used for the code-rain audio is something he calls micro-looping. The idea is to build a sound that is simultaneously still and moving by layering many very short pieces of audio that are nearly but not quite identical, and offsetting where each one starts.
The psychoacoustic trick is subtle. If the loops are identical, the ear locks onto the repetition and hears stasis. If they are completely different, the ear hears noise. If they are nearly redundant but slightly offset, the ear hears something that is both present and advancing, without any single element obviously moving. The result is the distinctive cascading texture of the code rain: a sound that feels like it is continuously streaming past you, even though every individual layer is a tight loop.
How the technique builds the effect
- Start with short, carefully selected fragments of the digitized rain recordings — each only a few dozen milliseconds long.
- Duplicate each fragment across many tracks, each running at a slightly different start offset.
- Apply subtle variations: small pitch shifts, filter sweeps, volume envelopes, panning.
- Layer the results so the ear cannot lock onto any single element but hears a coherent, forward-moving flow.
- Sync the density of the layered audio to the density of the on-screen glyphs so the viewer's ears and eyes are locked to the same pulse.
Done well, micro-looping sounds like nothing in the real world. That is exactly the point. The code rain is a representation of a digital substrate that is not supposed to sound physical. The audio needed to be recognizably made of real elements — raindrops — but assembled into something that no physical process could produce.
05 Audio and Image: How the Sounds Match the Glyphs
Davis's work was only half of the code-rain puzzle. The visual glyphs came from a parallel act of appropriation on the visual side. Production designer Simon Whiteley built the character set for the rain by scanning a Japanese cookbook — specifically a sushi recipe book — and selecting 53 glyphs, most of them mirrored katakana. The parallel is not accidental. Davis and Whiteley had different problems but the same constraint: make a digital substrate feel substantial without borrowing any obvious cinematic cliche. Whiteley took cookbook scans and flipped them so they stopped looking like Japanese. Davis took rain recordings and sliced them so they stopped sounding like rain. Both solutions work because the original material is recognizable enough at the edges to ground the effect in reality, while the manipulation is aggressive enough to make the final result feel other.
On screen, the timing lines up. The density of audio events per second tracks the density of visible cursor heads. Cursor stammer events — the brief synchronized hesitations where every bright leader holds position for a tick — have matching gaps in the audio. The synchronized glyph swaps that make the rain shimmer are reflected in the audio's pulse structure. It is one of cinema's tightest audiovisual pairings.
06 Resurrections: Rebuilding the Code for 2021
Twenty-two years after The Matrix, Dane Davis returned as supervising sound editor on The Matrix Resurrections (2021), sharing the role with Steph Flack. The team rebuilt the code-rain audio for the fourth film's expanded visual palette, which included a reimagined code corridor and new sequences that did not exist in the original. The challenge on Resurrections was to keep the original's identity while using modern tools. Pro Tools has advanced in two decades. Convolution reverb, granular synthesis, and spectral resynthesis that were experimental in 1999 are now standard. The Resurrections code rain is audibly richer than the 1999 version — more bands, more spatial information, more per-element variation — but if you listen side by side, you can hear the same underlying technique. Short fragments, offset starts, built from real-world water recordings, pulled apart and put back together inside the box.
The decision to keep Davis in the supervising chair was a statement of continuity. The Wachowskis hired back most of their original heads of department for Resurrections, and sound was no exception. The film's critical reception was mixed, but the sonic identity of the code rain — one of the few things every viewer remembers from the 1999 film — was preserved.
07 Listen For It
Three sequences in The Matrix are the best showcases for Davis's code-rain work:
- The opening title sequence. The first audible second of the film is the code rain. Listen past the Warner Bros. logo sting and you will hear the micro-looped raindrops establishing the film's sonic identity before any other element arrives.
- The operator scenes with Tank. Whenever the camera lingers on the Nebuchadnezzar's monitors showing flowing green glyphs, the audio is a solo for Davis's code rain. There is no dialogue or score to mask it, and the pulse of the audio exactly tracks the density of characters on the monitor.
- Neo's final scene. When Neo sees the world as code for the first time, the audio mix drops every other element and the code rain takes over the track. This is the moment the film earns Davis's Oscar — you are hearing the digital substrate revealed, and the sound has to sell the idea that the character's perception has fundamentally changed.
08 What This Means for Modern Recreations
Most software recreations of the Matrix digital rain ship only the visual half of the effect. Matrix Desktop renders the glyphs as a live wallpaper at 60 frames per second, but we have intentionally left the audio out of the default experience — a live wallpaper that constantly plays ambient audio is exactly the kind of thing that would make a user uninstall it after a day. That does not diminish Davis's work; it just means any faithful digital-rain experience has to make a deliberate choice about when to wake the ears up.
